Chapter Nine

Tears stung my eyes as the wind whipped around me. I could barely catch my breath as I gasped for air. My skin froze as, I swear, icicles stabbed my face.

"Turn!" Grayson shouted as he tightened his grip around my waist and leaned to the left.

I tried to do as he said, but it must have been too late because the sled hit a bump. We rose up into the air and then slammed down on the ground. The sled continued on as if nothing had happened.

I, on the other hand, let out a yelp as pain shot up my already aching leg.

"You need to pay attention," Grayson yelled. His breath was warm on my ear.

Even now, while we were shooting down the hill to our imminent death, he angered me. I shook my head. "Don't tell me what to do," I shouted back at him.

He scoffed but held onto me as he tipped the sled to the right, narrowly missing a tree that we were headed towards at high speed.

"Why are you so stubborn?" he shouted.

Before I could answer, the sled started heading in the direction of another tree. I leaned to the right just as Grayson leaned to the left. Suddenly, the tree was coming closer and closer to us.

"Ellie!" Grayson shouted and I parted my lips to respond.

Suddenly, he pulled me off the sled and we tumbled through the snow. I clamped my eyes shut and held on to Grayson like a life raft.

"Hold on," Grayson said and before I could open my eyes to see what he was talking about, I heard a thump and felt the force ripple through his chest.

I had no idea what we'd just run into, but whatever it was stopped us from moving.

We lay there, me next to Grayson, in the freezing snow. I was just grateful that we were no longer careening down the hill. I could hear our heavy breathing and through the layers of his coat, I could feel Grayson's heart pound in time with mine.

It must be from the adrenaline that comes from racing down the hill—nothing else.

I felt a gloved hand brush a clump of my hair off my cheek. I winced, not from pain, but from the fact that his touch felt so soft. So caring and I hated and loved it at the same time.

"Ellie?" he whispered.

I kept my eyes closed, trying to figure out what to say to him. Sorry? Thanks? Nothing sounded right in my mind.

"Are you okay?" he asked. His voice was low and full of worry.

I pinched my lips shut and let my eyes flutter open. I could see Grayson peering over at me and just behind him was a tree trunk. He'd hit the tree. Suddenly, I didn't care about anything from our past; I was just worried about him. Was he okay?

"Grayson," I said as I pushed my hands into the snow. It gave way, making it harder for me to move toward him. "You're hurt," I said once I was sitting.
